Take This Waltz is an operatic and contemporary dance performance inspired by the music of the Canadian legend Leonard Cohen.
Onstage, Daniel Okulitch, one of Canada’s most celebrated operatic voices, is joined by a classical chamber ensemble composed of violin/viola, cello and accordion. Dancer and musician Ted Littlemore—an artist of many talents—also performs, playing the accordion while dancing.
The work aims to broaden how vocalism, contemporary dance, instrumentation and the visual arts can be applied to well-established repertoire, without diluting its unique qualities.
The production received its world premiere on September 10, 2022, as a co-presentation by Vancouver Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria and the Chutzpah! Festival.
