Description

Resurrected from the dead, Mommy returns to haunt Québec and take revenge on the living. Horrified by today’s world, this undead grandmother dreams of restoring a bygone golden age. To achieve her goal, she transforms her ideological opponents into zombies, enlisting them in a chillingly fascist social project. By turns martyr, pop star and tyrant, Mommy constantly reinvents herself to seduce the masses.

In this political satire staged as a rap performance, Olivier Choinière subverts theatrical conventions to expose the rise of reactionary rhetoric. Blending storytelling, lip-sync, original songs, choreography and gory special effects, the production plunges audiences into a world where the undead seize power under the guidance of a live DJ with a messianic aura. Exhilarating, irreverent and fiercely timely, Mommy, The Return is a theatrical release as delirious as it is disturbing.

Reviews

“For this production, which he orchestrated with great skill, Olivier Choinière entrusted the role of Mommy to Gabriel Lemire. The actor, one of the finest talents of his generation, is breathtaking in the role of this monster in a dressing gown! At the end, when Mommy becomes a heroic figure for the duration of a striking tableau, Lemire is astonishing!”

La Presse

“Yet beneath the mask of buffoonery, this show is a head-on attack. Against the resurgence of fascist and reactionary discourse, here and elsewhere. Against those who radically oppose change and progress, because ‘things-were-better-before’…”

La Presse

“Led by the outstanding Gabriel Lemire as Mommy and Sarah Laurendeau as DJésus, the cast virtuously blends lip-syncing with rhymed spoken word.”

Le Devoir

“It is with stunned delight that one discovers this creation, as grotesque as it is critical, drawing on political satire, zombie narratives (hilarious special effects), hip-hop shows, and even Disney fairy tales.”

Le Devoir

“Funny, well executed, and wildly inventive. Eman’s song-creation work is remarkable.”

Claudia Hébert, Tout un matin, Ici Première

“Olivier Choinière’s signature can be found in all the small details that make Mommy a blockbuster production. We can always count on the playwright and director to tell us the truth straight to our faces—his own, and also that of all those who, despite numerous obstacles, still stand up for social justice and freedom of expression in good faith.”
